COUNCIL ELECTION DECISION WELCOMED

Independent member for Port Macquarie, Peter Besseling, has welcomed the commitment from both the Government and Opposition to hold Port Macquarie-Hastings Council elections in September next year.

"Throughout the course of last year, I sought to clarify the position of both the Government and the Opposition in relation to local government elections here in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area, particularly given the different party approaches to Wollongong and Shellharbour Councils," Mr Besseling said.

"In the interests of planning, stability and political uncertainty, it is pleasing that the immediate future of the council administration has now been resolved.

"Uncertainty about the future management of the council isn't in the best interests of ratepayers, particularly in terms of decisions affecting the council's longer-term planning strategies.

"While the state government had a clear position last year, it is pleasing to see the Coalition is now on the same page and voters can look forward to exercising their democratic rights in September next year.

"I also welcome the fact that the Coalition has not revisited the National Party's suggestion that a local government referendum be held in conjunction with next month's state election to determine councillor numbers.

"The suggestion was unworkable in a state electorate that covers two Local Government areas and a Local Government Area that spans two separate state electorates," Mr Besseling said.
