GOOD NEWS FOR FIRE STATION
Port Macquarie Fire Station has received a significant boost to its future capacity to serve and protect local residents.
Independent Member for Port Macquarie, Peter Besseling, says $100,000 has been allocated for preliminary planning and survey work to allow the fire brigade to move to larger premises in Central Road.
"Although the current premises served their purpose, the new station will be state-of-the-art and it will address our community's needs well into the future," Mr Besseling said.
"Rather than an expensive refurbishment of the current site, the preferred long-term option is to co-locate a new station in Central Road, alongside our new Ambulance Station and new SES headquarters.
"The fire service has now engaged an architect and detailed land surveys will be carried out to identify any potential planning issues associated with the new site.
"Once the preliminary plans are complete, and agreement is reached on the scope for the new fire station, such as the number of units, staff and engine bays, detailed design work will begin and so too the tender process.
"The Port Macquarie Fire Brigade has served our community with distinction for almost 55 years, but the Hay St site is no longer adequate for its growing contingent of firefighters and engines.
"The station's full-time crew and retained firefighters attend more than 700 fire and emergency calls a year. To do their job effectively, they need modern premises on a site that is central to Port Macquarie's growing residential areas.
"This funding is an important first step in providing for future fire and rescue services in our community," Mr Besseling said.
The funds have already been committed and are not tied to an election outcome.
