STINGRAY CREEK BRIDGE RE-ANNOUNCED
Independent Member for Port Macquarie, Peter Besseling, says if the National Party was serious about funding Stingray Creek Bridge it would have offered up the outstanding $6 million needed to replace it, not re-announce funding already committed.
Mr Besseling, who three months ago secured $6 million in state funding toward the cost of replacing the council-owned bridge, said the Nationals' had offered not one cent more than was already committed and budgeted for.
"The $6m announced in December comprised the RTA's original offer of $3.2m plus an extra $2.8m, which was the direct result of taking the Minister to see the bridge and raising the matter in parliament.
"At the time, the Nationals described the funding as an outrage, claiming it would come at the cost of other local road projects.
"That wasn't the case, and Mr Stoner knows it. The Minister made it clear: 'there will be no impact to the NSW Government's annual funding contribution for regional roads managed by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, despite silly wayward claims to the contrary'.
"Two-and-a-half years of meetings with ministers and their staff, working with council and dealing with government bureaucrats is the only reason this funding is available. To simply organise a media event to announce the same outcomes, with no input into the process, is the true outrage.
"I welcome any new announcements for the Port Macquarie electorate but simply ask The Nationals to be open and honest with the community," Mr Besseling said.
